Nancy visits Lisa (and Puffy)
Lisa had moved to California (from Wisconsin) in the 1980s. Every few years we’d see her at one of Nancy’s parties in Milwaukee when she’d be back for a holiday visit. She was a dramatic party guest as she chattered on about films, having her teeth fixed or eyebrows tattooed, or whatever. That year, MS forced her to move to Oconto (Wis). Her mother lived there and she could live an affordable, low-stress existence. She got a spacious apartment in a new building and decorated it with things she’d brought back from her life in Beverly Hills--elaborately framed art, cream-colored upholstered furniture, and white ceramic vases in various shapes and sizes. She spent her days sleeping and watching Fellini films. She wore her Prada shoes and big city fashions when she walked Puffy, and bolstered her energy with copious amounts of iced-coffee sweetened with Splenda. One summer afternoon, we drove up to see her.
