Susan with Anne Holding Apple
Susan and her daughter Anne had moved to Manitowoc County to wait for Susan’s father to die. They wanted to be nearby. He was a retired dairy farmer with bone cancer. That summer, Anne was saying she didn’t want to grow up, and hated the prospect of living in “Bumfuck USA.” We’d photographed the two of them regularly ever since Anne was an infant. After we made this photograph, they baked an apple tart. They’re back in Milwaukee now.
