Dylan and Brett downtown Precariously balancing real life with chaos, Dylan and Brett effectively transformed literal reality into the surreal whirlpool of the mind. At the time we made this photograph, they were deli workers and college freshmen who shunned the slacker-grunge-cool generational trend of the moment. Instead they dressed like farm kids on their way to the county fair and behaved like spastic geeks. With their matching shirts and bolo ties, they made recordings of street noises in downtown Manitowoc with Radio Shack® tape recorders. One day mid-semester, they just split, making it to Colorado where they secured night-shift employment at a Burger King. A month of tape recording fast-food machinery and sketching cooking implements on hamburger wrappers culminated in a production sabotage incident that got them moving on to California.
